Narrow defeat for camogie team

Narrow defeat for camogie team

Maynooth's intermediate camogie team narrowly lost out to Kill in their Shield League Final on Monday night (26 July) in Johnstownbridge. In the end a Kill goal proved the telling score as Maynooth went down by two points, 1-4 to 0-5.

Intermediate Camogie Shield Final
Kill 1-4
Maynooth 0-5

The Intermediate camogie shield final will be remembered as one of the most exciting and competitive matches so far this year with Kill just shading it at the final whistle by two points.
Both teams were evenly matched in the first half with the defences holding firm. Kill were first to score in the 8th minute with a pointed free from the 45.
Maynooth centre back Siobhan O'Shea levelled matters three minutes later with a superb point from a 40-yard free.
The first and only goal of the match fell to kill in the 15th minute and there was an element of luck about it . The Maynooth defence seemed to have cleared their lines but the ball deflected off one of the Kill corner-forwards and crept into the corner of the net.
For the remainder of the first half  both teams added a further point with Maynooth centre-forward Tanya McGrath on the scoresheet following superb interplay between Nicola O'Hurley, Karen Feehan and Nikki Carew.
At half-time Kill led by three points on a scoreline of 1-2 to 0-2.
If the first half was exiting, the second half was worth the admission fee alone.
Both teams had goalscoring chances and on two occassions the width of the crossbar  prevented green flags being raised.
By the 50th minute Maynooth had reduced the margin to a single point  with further points from Siobhan O'Shea.
In fairness the Kill defence were very effective and  while Maynooth created a number of  good scoring chances  and midfielder Sarah Greally was very unlucky when her powerful goal bound shot from the 21 yard line hit the underside of the crossbar and eventually was cleared to safety, it was Kill who held on for victory
The Maynooth girls can hold their heads high despite this defeat  and look forward with optimism to the start of the championship campaign on 11 August against Moorefield.
